GeneFirst Welcomes WHO Guidance Highlighting the Role of HPV DNA Genotyping in Cervical Cancer Prevention
24 June 2026
GeneFirst Ltd., a UK-based molecular diagnostics company specialising in cancer screening and molecular testing, welcomes the recent publication of World Health Organization guidance on the use of HPV DNA genotyping in cervical cancer screening and prevention.
The guidance highlights the growing importance of HPV DNA genotyping in risk-based cervical screening strategies, recognising that different high-risk HPV types carry different levels of risk for cervical pre-cancer and cervical cancer. In particular, HPV16, HPV18/45 and other high-risk HPV groups are associated with differing levels of CIN3+ risk, supporting the clinical value of HPV tests that can provide genotype-level information.
GeneFirst’s Papilloplex® HR-HPV DNA Kit is designed to detect and individually identify 14 high-risk HPV genotypes associated with cervical cancer risk, including HPV16, HPV18, HPV45, HPV31, HPV33, HPV35, HPV52 and HPV58, as well as additional high-risk types.
By providing individual HPV genotyping information, Papilloplex® HR-HPV DNA supports laboratories and screening programmes in moving beyond simple HPV positive/negative results towards more informed, risk-based patient management.
The WHO guidance also recognises that screening strategies should take account of local follow-up capacity, treatment availability and programme resources. In settings with sufficient follow-up capacity, WHO suggests the use of HPV DNA testing with extended or limited genotyping to support risk-based management pathways.
The recommendations reinforce the growing global focus on HPV DNA testing and genotype-informed screening approaches as part of efforts to reduce the burden of cervical cancer and support the WHO strategy for cervical cancer elimination.
“We strongly support the WHO’s updated guidance and its emphasis on the role of HPV DNA genotyping," said Winnie Wu, Chief Operations Officer at GeneFirst. "Papilloplex HR-HPV DNA was developed to provide clinically meaningful genotype information that can support risk-based screening and help ensure that women receive the most appropriate follow-up and care based on their individual risk profile.”
